The Boat's Previous Crossings...
The boat was built in 2003 by Justin Adkin and Jamie Roswell, having been designed by Phil Morrison. It was the first 4 man boat to be built and set the 4's record in 2003/4 of 36 days 59 minutes and 12 seconds. Queensgate, as it was known was rowed to Barbados and won the 4 man class.
Queensgate were a crew from Dartmouth featuring Shaun Barker, Phil Langman, Jason Hart and Yorkie Lomas. A book of their adventure called Oar-Some is available.

The boat was then passed onto David Martin, Glynn Coupland, Neil Wightwick and George Simpson who rowed under the new name of Atlantic 4. In 2005/6 Atlantic4 rowed to Antigua in 49 days 14 hours and 21 minutes, finishing in second place within their class.

In 2007/8 Rachel Smith and Lin Griesel took over the boat, named her Barbara Ivy, and rowed across the Atlantic as a pair, raising money and awareness for the charity “Breast Cancer Care”. As a result Rachel and Lin painted the boat pink and rowed to Antigua in 76 days 11 hours and 12 minutes. They were the first to capsize her in bad weather, and fingers crossed, the last!

Rich and Tom took over ownership of the boat in October 2008 and are still looking to re-name her, subject to receiving a platinum sponsor. Hoping to complete the trip in around 60 days, the valuable experience of the other three crews is sure to continue the history and passion shown towards the original Queensgate.
